Hello. I'm new to this forum and so forgive me if you see my message posted one or two times too many. A court reporter and I were discussing the use of quotation marks. She uses quotation marks frequently, such as: He said, "She hit me from behind," and, "What did she mean by 'hit'?", even though the attorney ever said the actual word quote. I was taught that you only use quotation marks when the attorneys say quote. Thanks for any feedback. gkmay |

According to Morson's Guide to Court Reporting, your reporter is correct. In your example with the "he said," it's a direct quote, so it should be in quotation marks. In your example with the quoted word, this is also correct. The word "quote" does not have to be said.
Hope this helps, |
